Tudor Corvedale and the Reformation

Spend a day exploring how the Reformation changed the way of life for many people in South Shropshire. Local Hiatorian Wendy Brogden helps the visitor interpret the tudor properties visited in this Itinerary. In the Corvedale area, lands owned by Wenlock Priory were bought by local gentry who soon made substantial profits and built large houses.Churches that had been outposts of the Priory, became parish concerns, under the jurisdiction of the Hereford diocese. Some monks who had been displaced from the Priory found new roles as parish priests.

Iron Age Shropshire

The most noticeable remains of the Iron Age in Shropshire are the hillforts that are situated around the county. There are 50 known sites in the county. Bronze Age evidence has been found within some of them but the structures themselves are ultimately the work of Iron Age man. Hillforts were usually positioned to take defensive advantage of the landscape and as such are often found on the top of hills, hence the name. This tour takes in just 4 of the better known forts but there are plenty more to discover for yourself in Shropshire.

Just across the border, Herefordshire has a strong tradition of cidermaking and this itinerary will help you explore it. However not to be missed is our own cider maker on the side of the Clee Hills - Mahorall, a good place to start on your quest to discover true scrumpy. According to The Telegraph, Shropshire is one of the top 10 destinations for film lovers! This is not surprising as to beautiful landscape and unspoilt villages form a perfect backdrop for many films and TV adaptations. This itinerary takes you to a wide variety of places that have been used in blockbusters, such as Atonement, as well as lesser known films such as Straightheads. The list is continually growing too as more and more film producers discover the delights of the Shropshire countryside.
4 or 5 days can easily be spent exploring this itinerary, depending on your starting point and how long you wish to spend at each location soaking up the atmosphere.
